Motushima and Motushima Shrine
Motushima is one of the small islands located offshore from Tenjinzaki. Today, a breakwater provides access to the island on foot, making it possible for visitors to explore the area more easily. On the island stands Motushima Shrine, whose quiet grounds are nestled against rocky hills. Several small shrine buildings can be found within this peaceful setting.
The shrine enshrines Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto, a deity traditionally associated with Benzaiten and worshipped in connection with water, the sea, and prosperity. The shrine was originally located on Tadokoro Island, near the present-day sea torii. However, repeated damage to the shrine buildings caused by typhoons led to its relocation to Motushima in 1926.
The sea torii itself was built one year earlier, in 1925. Although the shrine was later moved, the torii remained standing in the sea. It continues to serve as a striking reminder of the area’s long religious and maritime history.
A Scenic Place to Experience Nature and Local History
The waters around Motushima are also well known as a destination for fishing and exploring the rocky shoreline. On weekends and holidays, anglers and visitors come to enjoy the natural coastal environment. A walking path known as the Kani-kun Aruki Road runs along the breakwater. The name refers to the sideways walking style of a crab, reflecting the area’s connection with its rocky coastal environment. Visitors can enjoy a pleasant stroll while feeling the sea breeze and listening to the sound of the waves.
From along the path, there are beautiful views of the sea torii and Motushima. Together with the natural scenery of Tenjinzaki, the landscape offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the peaceful and distinctive character of Tanabe’s coastline.
The Best Time to See the Sea Torii
The most recommended time to visit the sea torii is from late afternoon until just before sunset. On a clear day, the torii and the surface of the sea glow in the warm evening light, creating a particularly atmospheric scene.
The breakwater near Tenjinzaki Motushima No. 1 Parking Area provides an excellent viewpoint, with a direct view toward the torii gate. It is especially popular among photographers who want to capture the torii framed by the sea and sunset.
A Peaceful Coastal Experience in Tanabe
The sea torii is also beautiful during the daytime, when the clear blue sea creates a bright and refreshing atmosphere. However, its character changes completely as evening approaches. The warm colors of the setting sun and the silhouette of the torii create a serene and almost mystical landscape.
