Kitahama Sea Cave: A Natural Rock Arch
One of the interesting geological features visible from Rinkaiura Beach is Kitahama Sea Cave, a naturally formed rock arch created through the gradual erosion of the coastline by waves over a very long period of time.
The dramatic rock formation is an impressive example of the power of nature and is regarded as one of Shirahama’s lesser-known scenic spots. Through the opening in the rock, visitors can see Tojima Island and enjoy a beautiful view of the surrounding sea.
The area around the rock formation can be dangerous because of the possibility of falling rocks or unstable sections of the cliff. Visitors should therefore keep a safe distance from the rocks and follow local safety guidance when viewing the formation.
Access to Rinkaiura Beach
Rinkaiura Beach is approximately 20 minutes by car from Shirahama Station on the JR Kisei Main Line. By car, it takes approximately 15 minutes from Nanki-Shirahama Interchange on the Kisei Expressway.
If you are traveling by bus, the nearest stop is Rinkai, from which the beach is about a 5-minute walk.
Enjoy Shirahama’s Quieter Coast
While Shirahama is famous for its beautiful beaches and lively tourist attractions, Rinkaiura Beach offers a more peaceful alternative. Its combination of clear water, sandy and rocky shores, marine life, and dramatic coastal scenery makes it an appealing destination for nature lovers and travelers seeking a relaxing escape.
With Engetsu Island, the Minakata Kumagusu Museum, and the Kyoto University Shirahama Aquarium nearby, visitors can easily combine a peaceful beach visit with sightseeing. If you want to discover a quieter and more natural side of Shirahama, Rinkaiura Beach is well worth adding to your itinerary.
