The highlight of Miyama no Sato Forest Park is its spectacular 1,646-meter-long wisteria trellis trail, recognized as one of Japan’s longest wisteria-covered walkways.

The shop sells a wide variety of local specialties, including dried shiitake mushrooms, umeboshi pickled plums, fresh agricultural products, and handmade ice cream.
One particularly popular product is Gon-chan-zuke, a local pickle made from itadori, a wild plant known locally as gonpachi. It has a crisp texture and a savory soy-sauce-based flavor.
Because this specialty is closely associated with the local area and production is limited, it can sometimes sell out early in the day.
The shop is also a convenient rest stop for visitors heading toward the wisteria trellis trail or the nearby Yahho Point.
Historic Kamiatagi Shrine
Near Miyama no Sato is Kamiatagi Shrine, a historic shrine believed to have been founded in 922.
The shrine grounds are surrounded by an impressive forest of old cedar and cypress trees, including trees believed to be more than 450 years old. Walking through the quiet grounds creates a peaceful and almost timeless atmosphere.
The shrine’s annual spring festival, held on April 28 and 29, is also known as the Flower Festival. It has been designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Wakayama Prefecture.
The festival features colorful flower banners and elegant dances performed by children in ceremonial costumes. The event is considered one of the area’s most distinguished traditional festivals and is sometimes described as a celebration unlike any other south of Kyoto.
The combination of ancient trees, traditional architecture, and local festivals makes Kamiatagi Shrine an excellent place to experience the cultural heritage of the Hidakagawa mountain region.
Tsubayama Dam Lake and Yahho Point
Tsubayama Dam is a major multipurpose dam in Wakayama Prefecture, built for purposes including flood control and hydroelectric power generation. The resulting lake has been selected as one of Japan’s “100 Best Dam Lakes” for its scenic beauty.
The lakeside landscape changes throughout the year. Cherry blossoms and azaleas appear in spring, hydrangeas bloom in summer, and colorful foliage arrives in autumn. During the early summer season, the sight of carp-shaped streamers flying over the lake is another popular attraction in Japan.
One of the area’s most unusual attractions is Yahho Point, a spot famous for its impressive echo.
Visitors can stand in the mountains, shout toward the opposite slope, and hear their voice return as a clear echo. The site is sometimes promoted as “Japan’s most fun Yahho Point.”
Yahho Point can be reached after crossing the bright red Tsubayama Lake Bridge. Calling out into the peaceful mountain landscape and hearing the echo come back is a simple but surprisingly exhilarating experience.
The area also hosts the annual All-Japan Yahho Championship, an entertaining event centered around the famous echo.
Tsubayama Lake Bridge and Green Park Tsubayama
Tsubayama Lake Bridge is a pedestrian suspension bridge approximately 200 meters long spanning Tsubayama Dam Lake.
The vivid red bridge stands out beautifully against the blue water and green mountains, making it a popular photography location. Crossing the bridge also provides a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the scale of the surrounding natural landscape.
On the other side of the bridge is Green Park Tsubayama, where visitors can find an observation deck and Yahho Point.
The views from the bridge itself are also impressive, offering a different perspective of the lake and mountains and making the walk across the bridge part of the attraction.
