A Spectacular Place for Stargazing
A Natural Planetarium Under the Open Sky
The greatest attraction of Kawabe Astronomical Park is undoubtedly its panoramic night sky.
Because there are relatively few strong city lights around the park, clear nights can reveal an impressive number of stars. Looking upward from the spacious grounds can feel like watching a natural planetarium, with the darkness of the surrounding landscape making the stars appear especially vivid.
The park has been designed to make use of the natural slope of the hill, creating open spaces where visitors can sit or lie down on the grass while looking at the sky. On a quiet night, the combination of cool air, darkness, and countless stars creates a peaceful experience far removed from the noise of everyday life.
A Former Center for Astronomy
The park once operated an astronomical observatory and planetarium, providing opportunities for visitors to learn about astronomy and explore the wonders of space.
Both facilities are currently closed, but the natural night sky remains one of the park’s most attractive features. Visitors can still enjoy the experience of observing the stars in an open outdoor setting, making the park a memorable destination for anyone interested in astronomy or simply looking for a peaceful place to spend an evening.
Panoramic Views Across the Hidaka Area
Beautiful Daytime Scenery
Kawabe Astronomical Park is also recognized as one of Wakayama Prefecture’s 100 Selected Spots for Sunrise and Sunset Views.
From the elevated areas of the park, visitors can look across the Gobo urban area and the vicinity of the mouth of the Hidaka River. On clear days, mountains and the distant sea create a broad and open panorama.
The scenery is particularly refreshing during the daytime. Visitors can take a leisurely walk around the park, enjoy the green surroundings, or simply sit on the grass and take in the view.
A Beautiful Sunset
As the sun begins to set, the scenery takes on an entirely different character. The sky gradually turns orange and gold, creating a peaceful sunset landscape across the hills and distant coastline.
One of the special features of Kawabe Astronomical Park is therefore the way its scenery changes throughout the day: blue skies and green landscapes during the day, colorful sunsets in the evening, and a star-filled sky after dark.
A Spacious Grassy Area for Families
Relaxing Outdoors with Children
The park has a large grassy area where visitors of all ages can relax and enjoy the outdoors. Families can spend time together in the open air, while children have space to move around and enjoy the natural surroundings.
Some of the larger playground equipment, including a large play structure and a Tarzan rope, was previously installed in the park but has since been removed because of aging and deterioration.
Nevertheless, the spacious grounds and smaller play facilities still provide a pleasant environment for families. The open landscape also makes the park a comfortable place for picnics, leisurely walks, and simply enjoying the fresh air.
Future Improvements
New playground equipment is planned with a target installation around 2028. This is expected to make the park even more attractive as a family-friendly destination in the future.
A Relaxing Space with a Street Piano
One of the park’s indoor facilities features a street piano that visitors can play freely.
Experienced musicians can stop by to practice or perform, while casual visitors can also sit down and try the instrument. The sound of the piano in a quiet, nature-filled environment creates a pleasant contrast with the surrounding landscape.
For music lovers, this provides an unexpected highlight during a visit to the park. It also contributes to the welcoming and relaxed atmosphere of the facility.
Stay Overnight at Cosmo Port
Accommodation for Families and Groups
Visitors who want to spend more time enjoying the park can stay at the on-site accommodation facility, Cosmo Port.
The facility has a total of 12 Japanese-style and Western-style rooms and can accommodate up to 56 guests. It is suitable not only for family trips but also for sports camps, school groups, training programs, and other group activities.
A training room is also available, allowing groups to combine outdoor activities with meetings, study sessions, or team-building programs in a peaceful natural environment.
Excellent Sports Facilities
The area around the accommodation offers extensive sports facilities. There are six indoor tennis courts and ten outdoor tennis courts, with lighting available for evening use.
These facilities make Kawabe Astronomical Park particularly suitable for sports teams and groups looking for a location where they can combine training, accommodation, and recreation in one place.
A New Futsal Facility
In May 2026, a new futsal facility opened at the park.
The facility consists of two half-size courts that can also be combined for use as one full-size court. Lighting is provided, allowing games and practice sessions to continue into the evening.
Balls are available for free rental, making it easier for visitors to enjoy futsal without bringing all their own equipment.
For safety reasons, however, metal and resin spikes are not permitted. Visitors planning to use the facility should check the rules and wear appropriate footwear.
Easy Access from Wakayama and Osaka
Another advantage of Kawabe Astronomical Park is its convenient road access despite its peaceful natural setting.
By car, the park is approximately seven minutes from either the Kawabe Interchange or Gobo Interchange on the Hanwa Expressway and Yuasa-Gobo Road.
This makes the park relatively easy to reach from the Wakayama City and Osaka areas. It is an attractive stop for travelers exploring central Wakayama by car, especially those looking for a place where they can experience nature without making a long journey into a remote mountain area.
From Green Landscapes to a Sky Full of Stars
Kawabe Astronomical Park offers a variety of ways to enjoy the natural beauty of Hidakagawa Town.
During the day, visitors can enjoy the spacious grassy grounds and panoramic views. Families can relax outdoors, while sports groups can make use of the extensive facilities. Visitors can also enjoy the street piano or stay overnight at Cosmo Port.
In the evening, the park becomes an excellent place to watch the sunset. Once darkness falls, the surrounding landscape becomes quiet and the stars begin to emerge overhead.
Although the astronomical observatory and planetarium are currently closed, the natural night sky remains a special attraction. For travelers who enjoy astronomy, photography, peaceful landscapes, or simply spending time outdoors, the park offers an opportunity to experience a quieter side of Wakayama.
