A Stopover for the Wandering Chestnut Tiger
Another special feature of Nishiyama is that it attracts the Chestnut Tiger butterfly (Parantica sita), a remarkable butterfly known for its long-distance seasonal migrations.
Since fiscal year 2022, part of Shoyo-no-Mori has been developed as the “Asagimadara Valley”. Fragrant eupatorium, known as fujibakama in Japanese, has been planted because it is favored by these butterflies, creating an environment where visitors can observe them.
The Chestnut Tiger is a large butterfly with beautiful, pale blue-gray, semi-transparent wings marked by dark veins. Rather than constantly beating its wings, it often appears to glide gently on the wind, creating an elegant and distinctive sight.
A Butterfly That Travels Thousands of Kilometers
The Chestnut Tiger undertakes remarkable seasonal migrations. It moves northward from spring into summer and travels south again in autumn.
Marking studies have confirmed individual butterflies traveling more than 1,500 kilometers during their southward migration. This extraordinary journey has earned the butterfly a reputation as a “traveling butterfly.”
From summer through autumn, the butterflies gather around flowers such as fujibakama, thoroughwort, and thistles to feed on nectar. The “Asagimadara Valley” provides an opportunity to observe this fascinating relationship between butterflies and flowering plants.

Nishiyama Picnic Green Space and Shoyo-no-Mori are approximately a 20-minute drive from JR Kii-Uchihara Station.
By car, the site is approximately 20 minutes from the Kawabe Interchange on the Hanwa Expressway and Yuasa-Gobo Road.
Because the park is located in a naturally rich mountain environment, visitors planning to explore the walking trails are advised to wear comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes.
