A Large Irrigation Pond Built in the Edo Period
Kameike Pond has a history dating back more than 300 years. It was constructed in 1710, during Japan’s Edo period, under the direction of Izawa Yasobei, a highly skilled civil engineer who served the Kishu Domain.
The pond was created as an irrigation reservoir to support agriculture in the surrounding area. When full, the surface covers approximately 130,000 square meters, while its storage capacity is around 540,000 cubic meters, making it one of the largest irrigation ponds in Wakayama Prefecture.
Remarkably, the construction was completed in only about three months. Approximately 55,000 workers were mobilized for the project, and the reservoir was built through a combination of engineering knowledge and enormous amounts of manual labor.
After its completion, the pond supplied water to approximately 300 hectares of farmland. For generations, Kameike therefore played an important role in supporting local agriculture and the lives of people in the surrounding communities.
Enjoy Nature Throughout the Four Seasons
Today, a walking path of approximately 4 kilometers circles Kameike Pond. The path provides an enjoyable setting for walking, jogging, and leisurely sightseeing while taking in the scenery around the water.

An artificial island lies in the center of Kameike Pond. On the island stands Soseikaku, a historic building with an elegant traditional Japanese design.
Soseikaku was originally constructed as a villa by Tokugawa Yorimichi, the 15th head of the Kishu branch of the Tokugawa family. The building was later relocated to its present site on the island of Kameike.
The structure features elements of traditional shoin-zukuri architecture, a style associated with traditional Japanese residences and formal reception spaces. Its historic character provides an interesting contrast with the surrounding natural landscape.
Soseikaku is also designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan, recognizing its architectural and historical value.
Cross the Suspension Bridge to the Island
