The Story of a Kind-Hearted Old Woman
Ubagataki Falls is associated with a poignant local legend that has been passed down through generations.
According to the story, an elderly woman once lived in this area. One day, officials arrived to conduct a land survey and asked her whether there were any rice fields further upstream.
She answered, “There are none.” In reality, however, villagers had secretly cultivated rice fields upstream in an effort to avoid paying taxes imposed by the authorities.
Her answer protected the villagers and allowed them to escape punishment. Several years later, however, another official visited the area and noticed pieces of straw being carried downstream by the waterfall. This led him to discover the existence of the hidden rice fields.
A Shrine Built in Her Memory
The official became angry and blamed the elderly woman. According to the legend, she was eventually killed as a result of the incident.
The villagers were grateful for the sacrifice she had made to protect them. To honor her memory and comfort her spirit, they are said to have built a small shrine beside the waterfall.
The shrine remains near the falls today, and the name Ubagataki, meaning “Old Woman’s Waterfall,” is traditionally associated with this story.
